Major River Valley and Irrigation Projects of Jharkhand
Jharkhand is richly endowed with a variety of natural resources, particularly abundant water resources. The physiographic nature of the state is primarily a plateau, and most of its rivers are fed by rainfall. The main source of precipitation is the South-West Monsoon; thus, rivers carry much water during the monsoon season but almost none at all during the summer months. This uneven temporal distribution of water has always presented an obstacle to agricultural productivity as well as regional development. To combat this deficiency, numerous projects, including those related to river valley development and irrigation, have been established in various places throughout the state.
The Jharkhand government has undertaken various types of irrigation schemes—major, medium, and minor—to establish a system for controlling water through the use of storage, conservation methods, and regulated distribution of water. The overall objectives of these projects have been to increase agricultural productivity, create opportunities for a multiple-cropping system, and provide financial security in rural areas while supporting economic development through balanced regional development. The total irrigable land in Jharkhand is approximately 24.59 lakh hectares, and there are currently approximately 9.198 lakh hectares of developed irrigation potential, or 37.40 percent of the total. Consequently, there remains a substantial amount of land available for development into irrigated agriculture, as indicated by the 14.39 lakh hectares of potential that have yet to be developed as part of this larger land area.
Objectives of River Valley Projects
The principal objectives underlying the development of river valley projects in Jharkhand are as follows:
Subarnarekha Multipurpose Project
The Subarnarekha River is one of the major rivers of Jharkhand, flowing subsequently through West Bengal and Odisha. A multipurpose river valley project has been developed on this river system. The first phase of the project commenced during 1982–83 and was completed in 2008. It is an inter-state project involving the cooperation of three states. The project has been designed to promote irrigation expansion, hydroelectric power generation, and overall regional development. Approximately 120 megawatts of electricity is generated from the Hundru Waterfall.
Major Structural Components
Damodar Valley Project
Historically known as the "Sorrow of Bengal," the Damodar River has caused many floods throughout the years and continues to do so every year during the monsoon season. In 1948, the Damodar Valley Corporation was established to control flooding and help ensure more uniform use of the river water. The Damodar Valley Project was one of the first multipurpose river valley projects in India. The Damodar Valley Project consists of building dams on the Damodar River and its two main tributaries—the Barakar River and the Bokaro River. A statutory authority manages the operations of the project and is also responsible for the overall integrated management of the entire river basin area.
Major Objectives
The project provides irrigation facilities to nearly 8 lakh hectares of land and generates approximately 1200 megawatts of electricity. It has significantly contributed to the industrial development of Jharkhand and adjoining regions of West Bengal.
Major Dams under the Project
North Koel Project
The North Koel Project is based on the North Koel River and serves the Palamu region and its adjoining areas. The primary objective of this project is to reduce dependence on monsoon rainfall and provide assured irrigation facilities.
Amanat Irrigation Project
Constructed on the Amanat River, this project is of considerable importance to the Palamu region. It contributes to stabilizing agricultural production in drought-prone areas.
Punasi Reservoir Project
The Punasi Reservoir Project is a water storage project located on the Ajay River in Deoghar district. It is an important irrigation project that serves as a source of water and helps in water conservation in the area. As a result, agricultural productivity has increased in the surrounding region.
Ajay Irrigation Project
The Ajay Irrigation Project is an agricultural development project associated with the Ajay River. The purpose of the project is to provide irrigation facilities for rain-fed agriculture in Deoghar district through the establishment of permanent irrigation infrastructure.
Gumani Irrigation Project
Situated in the Santhal Pargana region, the Gumani Irrigation Project contributes to regional agricultural development. It is categorized as a minor to medium irrigation scheme.
Konar Irrigation Project
The Konar Irrigation Project, constructed on the Konar River in Hazaribagh district, provides irrigation facilities to agricultural land. It also forms an important component of the Damodar Valley system.
Upper Shankh Project
The Upper Shankh Project is based on the Shankh River and is significant for irrigation expansion in south-western Jharkhand.
Bateshwarsthan Ganga Pump Canal Project
Under this technologically significant project, water from the Ganga River is lifted through pumping mechanisms and conveyed via canals to agricultural fields.
Panchkhero Reservoir Scheme
This is a minor irrigation scheme designed to supply water to agricultural land within a limited command area.
Sonua Reservoir Scheme
Located in the West Singhbhum region, the Sonua Reservoir Scheme fulfills the irrigation requirements of the local agricultural community.
